Collection: Passiecantate Dichterbij

'Closer', a love story.
Two years ago Marry van Berkel made the Dutch translation of the Passion Cantata 'The Weeping Tree' written by Joseph M. Martin. She was asked to do so by the CRK Adonaï from Waddinxveen on the basis of her Dutch texts for the Christmas cantata 'De hemel roer ons aan vannacht', which the choir had sung with pleasure. Thus began a four-month process of reading, listening, letting it sink in, putting it aside, polishing ....
The original piece was written from the tree, from which the cross of Jesus was made. This approach has a very American feel and Marry was given free rein to work on the piece - while maintaining the intention of Joseph M. Martin. The essence of that tree in the original piece was: experiencing the suffering of Jesus up close. That led to the title song 'Dichterbij'. The invitation to stay attentively nearby is reflected in all the songs.
