The Johannes Passion by JS Bach is less well-known in the Netherlands than the Matthäus Passion. But the 'Johannes' can also be heard everywhere in the Netherlands in the weeks before Easter. Conductor Marcel den Dulk wrote a Dutch version of this passion. In his opinion, a performance in one's own language bridges the distance that a foreign language creates between the listener and the sung music. This is not a translation during the performance, but a translation to be sung. Marcel den Dulk is a church musician and choir conductor. He opens this edition with an explanation in which he gives his vision of the St. John Passion and the need for a translation. The translation itself is always placed next to the German original, against the background of Bach's manuscript. The quality of this work stands or falls with the sung result, but the translation is sympathetic. The complete vocal score is available separately*.
