Johannes de Heer has left an indelible impression with his songbook. His songs are still sung daily in many churches and by countless choirs and groups.
The compiler of the songbook was a colourful evangelist who knew how to combine a commercial spirit and an interest in music. At the age of thirteen, Johannes de Heer had already had a job as the youngest clerk in the music shop Lichtenauer in Rotterdam, the city where he was born in 1866. His parents gave him a 'small seraph organ' on which he taught himself to play, as best he could. He was not very satisfied with his performance as an organist. He called himself 'a mediocre dilettante without more' and a 'third-rate technician'. As a businessman, he was more successful. His music shop Joh. de Heer became a household name in Rotterdam...
